Anima Exhibition

When looking at art from another culture it is often assumed that it does not apply to us. The objects we look at are nothing more than exotic statements of a “reality” that is not our own. In this frame of mind, it is not only hard to appreciate what is expressed but, more importantly, near impossible to get past cultural barriers to uncover a relevance common to us all. It is of course possible for art to remain stuck in its cultural context, to have meaning only to a distinct cultural group or to make a political statement. However, some objects transcend these boundaries and tell us something about our humanity, they refer to a sphere that we all have in common, no matter where we were born or how we were raised.
